The Future Ugandan Leaders

You have previously read a blogpost about the Maverick Leadership Scholarship created and designed by Toni Stanfield (Traverse City, MI) who continues to be the US Leader with our ACT Staff engaged in the identification of applicants, selection of scholars and followup with the students.

Toni's dream was to have impact on the future leadership in Uganda, specifically in the SW region where ACT serves. To date we have had four students attend and graduate from university and two who are currently in school. We have shared previous blogs about Judith Tukahirwe and Isaac Ainembabazi, already graduated and proving to be significant leaders in Rubanda District.

November 28th - coming soon! - is Giving Tuesday in the US. This is a day dedicated to nonprofit fund-raising. This year, ACT is asking for donations to continue this important program. You will be receiving another email inviting you to the campaign to make a gift.

But for now, I want to share with you the story of three of our students.

Benson Agaba, now 26 years old, was our second Maverick scholar. He shared his story:

"I got the opportunity to be a Maverick Scholar back in 2015/2016. When I was bound to join university for my higher education, I was deep in thoughts where my college tuition was going to come from, but hey, thanks to Madam Generous (Turinawe) and Mr. Gumoshabe (Guma), Karen Viele, Sue Waechter and Toni Stanfield, offered me a chance to apply for this prestigious life-changing scholarship. Through it, I was able to attain college education at Uganda Christian University, Bishop Barham campus graduating with a bachelors honor in education, Kiswahili major.

I currently live in Kampala (capital of Uganda), playing football (soccer) at Catda Football Club in the third level of the National leagues under the Federation of Ugandan Football Association (FUFA). Finally, I can't thank ACT Uganda enough for the opportunity they gave me through Maverick to accomplish my education stature in Uganda. I once more congratulate the organization upon serving the people of the community for 20 years!. They have really changed lives of many hopeless kids to become men and women. May God abundantly bless all the people behind the pillars of success or the organization and I am profoundly looking forward to the 20th Anniversary celebrations due to happen in December. Thanks you very much.    Sincerely, Benson"

Tushabomwe Naclet
"I am called Tushabomwe Naclet, the Maverick Scholar winner 2022. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with Education English and Literature and am in my second year of Kabale University. I have been fortunate enough to receive a scholarship from an esteemed organization (ACT) that has not only alleviated my financial burden but also provided invaluable support through my educational journey.

The gift of financial assistance receiving a scholarship from ACT has been a game change in my studies of higher education whereby it has relieved the burden of tuition fees, allowing me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of financial constraints. This support has not only eased my financial burden but also motivated me to excel academically knowing that my hard work is being recognized.

Being part of ACT has introduced me to a community of like-minded individuals who share a common goal of achieving academic success and this sense of belonging and support has been valuable through my educational journey. Beyond financial assistance, ACT has gone above and beyond providing me with invaluable advice, encouragement and guidance. This has been instrumental in shaping my academic and career goals, helping me navigate the complexities of my chosen field and providing insights into real world applications of my studies.

So, being under the Maverick Scholarship has been a life-changing experience and I am really humbled for everything that is being down toward me. Thank you.        Naclet Tushabomwe"

Ainomugisha Dickson
"I am Ainomugisha Dickson, Maverick Scholar winner 2023. I am currently pursuing a Bachelors of Education in Arts in Geography and History. I am in my first semester, year 1 at Kabale University.

It was a wonderful opportunity that I was offered this scholarship and I can truly say that this has restored my hope for better education as I was not so hopeful that I would get tuition for University. I am therefore thankful to ACT which has not only solved my financial burden but has also shown. me a parental care and love. For sure ever since I won the Maverick Scholarship, I have never forgotten to pray for ACT's success as well as the well-bring of it's staff, management and partners.

Through the Maverick Scholarship, I am sure that my dream will be achieved in the end. I am really thankful to ACT staff for the hospitality that they displayed from the time I visited the office delivering my application to date. I promise to make the best use of this scholarship in order to achieve a bright future and that's when I will be able to be the light to the community where I grew from.

In conclusion, therefore, I am grateful to all the people involved in ACT and pray for God's blessings upon everyone. I remain faithfully yours, Dickson Ainomugisha"
