Promoting public health in Muko

ACT has 6 Programs and one of those is HEAL (Health is Elemental to All Life). The desired outcomes for the HEAL Program are to promote good sanitation, healthy life choices, good nutrition and education about health.

To do this, ACT trained 15 volunteers from various villages who are now volunteer Health Promotion Workers. These volunteers go into one village at a time, hold a meeting (dialogue) for as many community members as possible - men, women and children. They begin by sharing about the services available through ACT. They then share some health-related information such as sanitation ideas, good parenting skills, health domestic partnerships, and so on. The group then
    1. discusses the greatest health issues in their village
    2. prioritizes those issues for the most important and urgent
    3. creates an Action Plan describing how they will work collaboratively to improve their         situations.
    4. After some time, the ACT Health Promotion Workers return to the village to follow up on     how the work is progressing.

This program is a good model for self sustainability - "teaching them how to fish" - instead of ACT providing for what they need, we are encouraging them to work together to pool their resources, talents and creativity to address their own issues.

The reports show positive results and include appreciation for the program:

Malnutrition: (Kanyamatembe Village) "The community members reported that they are doing well because they have started preparing the vegetable gardens like black night shade and carrots."
Domestic violence: (Kanyamatembe Village) "The LC1 Chairperson reported that, they have learnt too many things from aCT so they appreciated the services."
Sanitation: (Rwamigyendezo Village "The LC1 Chairperson said that according to his supervision he said the members are doing well because many people have toilets, drying racks, urinal places, bathing room places, and they are trying to cut the bushes around their homes. "

This health promotion program is funded by generous donors - many are physicians or dentists - who along with other donors provide the resources for health education for the Health Promotion Workers, equipment like flipcharts and markers, a salary for our Program Manager, Thomas Akankwasa (pictured in the top photo in the white shirt). We thank everyone who makes such a big difference in the every day lives of these wonderful people of Muko Sub County!
