Is ACT Really Having Impact??

Over the past 20 years (Happy Anniversary ACT - 2003!), there have been lots of times we feel dismayed that all we are doing really doesn't make that much difference. Then, we get a result that confirms that indeed, everyone's hard work is paying off! Yesterday, was one of those days for all of us involved in and supporting ACT!

As you know, ACT was asked by the Kigezi Diocese (Anglican) to take over the management of Muko High School a number of years ago. This has been a journey of highs and many lows in trying to stabilize the school academically, staff-wise and the physical campus. We have come a long way: new security fencing, solar power, better food for the kids, new bath areas for the kids, a new water system, raising the roof and repair of classrooms, a computer lab full of computers, computer training for the staff, successful recruitment of many new students, establishing the HONOR Scholarship Fund (also at Mulore School) and our most recent improvement, the beautiful new Science Lab! I hope those of you reading this recognize yourselves as donors to some of these efforts!

And, all of this is with one goal in mind, to help the students of Muko improve their lives through education. Well, the results are in and the Senior 4 Students (equivalent to 11th grade in the US) excelled! We have never seen results like this before! Muko HIgh School is leading the whole Rubanda District (pop. 208,000). Rev. Philip says, "9 of our students are the best in the District of Rubanda and our Best student, Daisy Owanani has 10 aggregates, is the 8th in greater Kabale area and has defeated most of the big schools in Kabale town. Our results have spoken volumes all over. People in Kabale town are very surprised. I am receiving congratulatory messages and calls from all over. We give all glory to God."

Retired Board Chair ACT Uganda, Rev. Esau Habomugisha says, "What a tremendous performance!! I congratulate all the successful students in their grades. Thanks be to God for the zeal of the students, teaching and non-teaching staff, thanking so much Rev. Philip for engineering UNITY among members of staff. I thank the ACT US lovely supporters for your overwhelming advice, quick responses to the needs of MHS and unwavering prayers. I thank ACT Uganda for the quick actions taken in the development programs. I am very optimistic that the [science] laboratory under completion will add more confidence of our students to do even better!"

Judith Tukahirwe, ACT HONOR Scholarship Manager, said, "I am proud once again to share the best results. This seems to be the year of difference, big ups to MHS staff and more big ups to HONOR Scholarship funders."

Here is a short interview from today with Daizy Owanani who was the top scoring student! In the photo below, she is 4th from the right in the Michigan sweatshirt!

Generous has received congratulatory calls from the retired Bishop Bagamahunda as well as calls from people she does not even know!

From Generous (ACT Uganda Director): "[To] Rev. Philip and your entire team, know that you have a NAME for the outstanding performance in Rubanda District. [To] ACT US/ACT UG, people are appreciating the outstanding support to MHS teachers, support staff and students providing conducive environment for learning and materials/equipment to help them in learning and real life experience."

What an achievement! And, there are two people as yet unmentioned that should be: Karen and Dave Viele who have volunteered tirelessly helping with the administration of the school, bookkeeping, music, teachers, students, finding Scholarship funders and loving the kids!

Let us all celebrate!
