Fantastic Friday

Hi All! We had an inspirational and wonderful day with our partners in Uganda!

The morning was spent doing a very special activity that we are unable to post on social media. Remind us all to tell you about it when we return.

Barbara served double duty with Diana and Sue in two separate meetings:

Uniquely Uganda Handcrafts (UUH): This is our handcraft program. The team will carry home a new variety of handcrafts for fall sales. Approximately twenty women attended the meeting to discuss the future of the handcrafts. Diana is encouraging the women to use more color and produce the baskets that sell best in the USA.

Health is Elemental for All Life (HEAL): The first hour was for the ACT HEAL staff. We talked about the financial limitations we have and how we can make the program better for the community members. We then met with the Health Promotion Workers (see below) and they shared the positive changes taking place in villages following the dialogues. As a group we talked about how to change the HEAL Program to keep it most relevant for the community members. We decided to try, as a pilot, dramas in places having large audiences (e.g. church services, schools, the local market) to share health issues and information. This will provide an entertaining way to engage people in the learning process. Along with the drama about a particular topic, there will be an introduction about ACT and its services and then following the drama will be a time for action planning about how people plan to implement what they learned.

Karen spent the day in Kabale recording a piece of music composed by our MUSIC teacher, Keneth. Keneth hopes to produce the recording for fundraising to support his own mission of helping a women's prison. It was so interesting to work in a Kabale recording studio. Karen met two fabulous musicians, a guitarist, Sam, and a recording technician, Nature. Keneth seemed very pleased with our recording and it was an experience Karen will never forget! Karen, Sam and Keneth had lunch together- see our African meal below, a beef stew with rice and metooke (a local dish rather like squash made from a green, unsweet banana), small potato and avocado!

Dick spent the afternoon at Muko High School collecting some videos from our HONOR Scholarship students. Rev. Philip brought the two HONOR students in to school that did a soap making demonstration for us on Wednesday. Dick interviewed them in the current science lab. Another HONOR scholar, Rachael, known as the highest achiever in the Chemistry department made a video that is spectacular in front of the new science lab we are building- we can't wait to share it when we get back home.

Dave was not feeling well and had to stay at the hotel for the day. It is not unusual for him to have a problem adjusting to food here- add the jet lag- and there is trouble! It is good to report that he is better as we write this.

Sending our best to you all!

  1. Sounds like lots of hard work is getting done in many different areas. Can't wait to see the new handcrafts--so exciting! Glad to see photos of the Health Promotion Workers & of Keneth & the studio folks. Prayers for good health for all--especially for Dave. Keep up the good work!
