Traveling once again to Uganda!

It has been since September 2019 since we sent a travel team from the U.S. to Uganda due to COVID. We have made 2 arrangements for trips since then, purchased the airline tickets and had to cancel at the last minute. This August, we hope to "turn the tide!" 

August 21st through September 10th we will travel to Muko to work alongside our partners in ACT. There will be a team of 6 of us going: Dave Viele, Karen Viele, Dick Dolinski, Diana Stubig, Barbara Disko and Sue Waechter. We will have a very busy agenda, per usual, including things like: 

1. meeting the new Bishop 
of Kigezi, Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, with whom we partner to manage Muko High School, pictured here with Muko High School Head Teacher, Rev Philip Ntwirenabo. 

2. meetings with our health promotion program staff who are working to transform our work into dramas about public health issues and begin to address ways to identify and respond to mental health issues in Muko,

3. see all the incredible physical improvements at Muko High School - the big Rotary grant that allowed us to install solar power at the school and another generous donor grant to install security fencing for the safety of the students and the school,

4. hold a MUSIC camp with the stringed orchestra participants culminating in a concert, 

5. check in with our agriculture program (HANDS) staff and see the huge amount of work/training they have accomplished in perma-gardening this past year with a generous grant from the Allen Foundation,

6. meet with our hand-crafters to discuss ways to move forward with our Uniquely Uganda Handcraft program,

7. meet with the ACT HONOR scholarship recipients to encourage their hard work,

8. meet with the administration and board of Muko High School to plan the future of the school. 

9. identify a way to have the Ugandan staff manage more of the communications for ACT - particularly the social media aspect. 

9. meet with the new ACT Board of Directors to do planning for ACT into the future. 

10. host a typical US baby shower for our staff members who have had babies since 2019 (our last trip there). We are sharing more with each other about our cultures!

11. And, lastly, and most importantly, spend time being with our friends in Uganda.

Many suitcases going and coming! we will have 12, 50-lb suitcases plus 6 carry on roller suitcases. Violins, violas, and 2 cellos along for the ride!

 Dear Friends! John and I just spent a week in Muko to celebrate the 20th Anniversary with our staff and the community. We just arrived home on Dec 21st. Generous and I were able to keep the whole thing a complete surprise to the staff. They had no idea we were coming until Christopher pulled up in the van with us in front of the ACT Resource Center. It was so much fun to see their faces! After Guma got over his shock and spoke, the first thing he said to me was, "You didn't send me an agenda!" With the staff, we always prepare a very detailed agenda for the time a team is visiting in Muko so we can accomplish many things while there! No agenda, Guma! ACT's Sustainable Future

How can we make ACT more self-sustainable? That was the question that led the ACT US Board to charter the FUNDS (Financial Ugandan Needs for Development & Sustainability) Task Force in early 2020 to research and propose new models of sustainability for ACT, for both programs in Uganda and ACT US.  FUNDS Task Force members include (from Muko, Uganda) Alexander "Guma" Gumoshabe, Generous Turinawe, Onesmas Arinda, Ken Blickenstaff (Indianapolis), and from Midland: Bill Busch, Kelly Busse, Gail Hoffman, Mark Maxwell, Roger Moll, Dave Molzahn, Lynn Pottenger and Sue Waechter (Traverse City).  The Task Force brainstormed possible social businesses that could be run in Uganda to provide ongoing revenue to support the ACT Uganda programs. 20 Years Celebrated with Fanfare!

Friday, September 8th and Saturday, September 16th, ACT and its friends and supporters celebrated 20 years of accomplishments and impact in Muko SubCounty Uganda and in our own lives here. It felt like a pinnacle in this beloved partnership. We heard brief presentations from our amazing staff in Muko about each programs accomplishments between 2003 and 2023.  We also enjoyed the song and dancing of these joy-filled people.  Together, we have truly made a difference. We planned our dinners to be food from Muko so people in the US could experience the good food we enjoy while in Uganda. We had chicken (prepared Ugandan-syle), green beans, chapati, roasted Irish potatoes, G'Nut sauce, cole slaw and we even added a dessert which Ugandans don't typically eat - mango crumb bars.
