Putting Education First

The ACT HONOR Scholarship Fund (Honesty, Opportunity, Need, Ownership and Respect) supports students by paying tuition, room and board at both Primary (elementary) and Secondary (high school) schools. The costs for these scholarship for one student for one year is $300. A student who applies must meet two criteria: demonstrate a strong desire to be in school and have a positive and model attitude toward others. Currently, donors in the US have provided for 117 Muko High School Scholarships and 74 Murole Primary School Scholarships. In addition, we have 21 scholarships for students who go on to vocational schools - a total of 212 HONOR Scholarships!

ACT designed the HONOR Scholarship to replace our previous orphan sponsorship program, MukoHOPE. We found some of the kids were not serious about school, felt less responsibility because of their sponsorship and were not finding success. By focusing on the students who really desire to be in school we have seen a substantial increase in academic scores. We even have one scholar at Muko High School who may be eligible to receive a government-based scholarship to university for the first time in the history of the school. A measure of success!

Our HONOR Scholarship Fund Manager, Judith Tukahirwe, has written about one of our current students:

"This is a story about one the HONOR Scholars, Beyonce Namara. Beyonce was awarded the full scholarship for the 2022 school year at Muko High School.

Beyonce is a Senior 4 candidate (in the US, roughly the equivalent of 11th grade). She is sitting for her final exams in October this year. In Uganda, Senior 4 year is one transition in High School between Senior 1-4 years and Senior 5 & 6 years - meant for students who plan to consider getting a university diploma or degree. Beyonce will have to pass her exams to move on in her education.

Her life has not been easy but at least she earned the scholarship. Below is her story in her own handwriting..."
